Colorado ranks No. 4 among the 50 states in a survey asking Americans where they would most like to live, up from fifth place last year.

Colorado follows California, Hawaii and Florida in the Harris Poll’s annual survey.

Following Colorado this year are Arizona, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas, New York and Washington state.

The Harris Poll asked 2,620 U.S. adults: “If you could live in any state in the country, except the state you live in now, what state would you choose to live in?”

The survey, released Tuesday, was conducted Sept. 14-20.

California has held the top spot every year since 2002, while Hawaii moved up from third to second place this year, Colorado to fourth place from fifth, and Arizona to fifth place from sixth.

On the other hand, Florida slipped a notch, from second to third, and Texas fell from fourth to eighth.

Colorado’s ranking in the annual Harris survey has risen from seventh place in 2006. Its highest rankings since 1997 were second place in both 1998 and 2000; Colorado has ranked in fourth place or higher nine times in 12 years.

By age group, Harris says Colorado ranks in second place among “matures” (age 65 and older) and in fourth place among “echo boomers” (ages 18 to 33), but is not in the top five among the 34-45 or 46-64 age groups.

Colorado ranks No. 4 among women but is not in the top 5 among men.
